London, England – Present Day

Daisy Hastings and her family are into live-action role-playing (LARP), and this has allowed her to act out her fantasies rather than deal with the real world. She lives above her family’s hobby shop and has few other outside interests because she is shy and feels she is socially inept. But when a chance to lead a Knight School in London at the Tower of London comes up, Daisy applies, though she doesn’t expect to land it. To her surprise, she does. Now she has to take a deep breath and get ready to live outside her small world in Lincolnshire and move to London.

Daisy is trying to settle into her new job teaching Knight wannabees when a new recruit shows up. It’s clear that he doesn’t want to be there, and he is insolent and annoying. Daisy soon learns that the royal family sent him there to learn knightly ways. He is a Viscount, and his name is Theodore “Teddy” Fairfax—and he is related to the royals. Teddy gives Daisy a bad time, but she isn’t going to take his guff. But one thing leads to another, and the Knight School is soon in disarray because of the battle of wills going on between Daisy and Teddy. Will she lose her job before the week is out?

Daisy and Teddy are what one might call social misfits. In LOVE AT FIRST KNIGHT, they try to outdo the other, but it turns out they might do better supporting each other. We don’t meet Teddy for a while as this tale sets up Daisy, her family life, and her move to London and her new job. In fact, most of the time we don’t see them together. The only point of view we read about is Daisy’s. From the outside, Teddy is a spoiled royal whose family is tired of his antics and thinks teaching him how to be a Knight would do him some good. Of course, this is still a LARP, which means that the only actual royal present is Teddy.

Readers will sympathize with Daisy. Her family loves her but maybe too much time spent with them has held her down. Getting the job—especially for a game she loves so well—will be good for her. She can prove to her family, especially her sister Marigold, that she can enjoy herself outside their happy circle. But even the simplest of things causes anxiety for Daisy, such as getting on the tube. In LOVE AT FIRST KNIGHT, we watch as Daisy grows more confident. But there is still the Teddy issue. He is a royal and he is attractive. Teddy seems like he doesn’t know what to do with himself. Can Daisy help guide him? They alternately hate and like each other. Will it soon lead to love?

Keep in mind that although this is set in modern-day England, the King and Queen are not of the Windsor family, even though certain other royals from years past are mentioned. LOVE AT FIRST KNIGHT takes you to an alternate universe so I guess it is part fantasy. Daisy and Teddy turn out to be likable characters and their tale of love slowly unfolds. Don’t miss LOVE AT FIRST KNIGHT.
