London, England – Present Day|

Sophie Chesterton has always been a spoiled rich girl who ran in exclusive London society circles, never bothering to get a job. Whenever she needed to buy something, her father didn't hesitate to pay the bills. Sophie lost her mother when she was young, and for a long time, it was just her and her daddy. But then he remarried, and Sophie, even at the age of twenty-five, doesn't care for her stepmother, Gail. But things changed for Sophie when her father died unexpectedly. Instead of being left a tidy sum of money in the will to spend as she pleases, she must support herself for six months before she will be given her inheritance. Sophie, who has never held a job—or cleaned a toilet—must find a job and a place to live. The job search isn't easy, especially since her only experience is partying and hanging out with her artsy friends. Finding a place to live is a little bit easier, though it is in a seedy part of London living with four men—and acting as their housekeeper. Sophie's mettle is about to be tested in a big way.

DIAMOND'S ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND is a cute and funny tale of a woman who suddenly finds herself adrift after spending her life only caring about herself. Sophie had thought her future would include being married to Rufus, but then she discovered him canoodling with one of her best friends. Leaving the party after breaking up with Rufus, she heads home, only to learn that her father had a sudden heart attack and is dead. Sophie's life has changed, and not in a good way. She has no money of her own and she doesn't have friends who will let her move in with them. Besides, the will mandates that she show proof she has been able to support herself. Eventually, she does find a job assisting a friend, Julius, who is supporting himself on the side with gigs taking pictures of topless women for “Page Three” of the Sun newspaper.

Meanwhile, Sophie settles in her new flat and gets to know her roommates. Cal is the handsome one and is always “entertaining” women in his room overnight. Eck is attracted to Sophie, but she has no intention of getting involved with a roommate. The other two, James and the one nicknamed Wolverine, pretty much stay in the background in DIAMOND'S ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND. As for her cleaning responsibilities, she digs right in because the guys are pigs living in a sty. However, using oven cleaner in the toilet is probably not a good idea, especially when one of the guys gets “splashed on” while using it. Sophie remains somewhat in contact with her two “best friends,” and it turns out the one who snogged Rufus is now engaged to him. How does Sophie react when she finds out?

Sophie does a lot of growing up in DIAMOND'S ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND. The former party girl learns to be self-sufficient and how to make do with very little. Meanwhile, she ends up having a one-night stand with Cal. But he is a Romeo and Sophie doesn't want to be just one of the notches on his bedpost. Will she turn her attention to Eck? What happens after the six months are up? All these questions are answered in the enjoyably funny DIAMOND'S ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND.
