Greece – Present Day

As THE SECRET OF THEIR BILLION-DOLLAR BABY opens, Alexandra “Sasha” Zamos lies in a hospital bed struggling to remember what happened. Then she remembers that she and her husband, Rafael, were in a car accident which happened shortly after she told him she loved him—and he responded by staring at her blankly. To give her time to adjust to the knowledge and to give her leverage against her hovering mother, stepfather, and husband, she pretends to not know who they are. Then the tale segues backward to three years ago when Sasha and Rafael first met and earlier.

Sasha’s father died while she was young and left her a hefty trust fund. Her mother remarried, a man so vile and controlling that he left Sasha in fear of him. When she was sixteen, she became pregnant via an affair with an older man. Her stepfather knew about it and threatened to use it to gain even more control over her money, so she snuck away and had the baby. Sasha gave it up for adoption to the midwife and she walked away. Three years ago, she met Rafael and convinced him to “save her” from being married off by her stepfather. He would marry her instead and they would have a carefree marriage without love. But now they want a child, and she can’t conceive. Is this penance for her earlier sins? So a surrogate is found and is pregnant. But what Rafael doesn’t know is that the surrogate is her child’s half-sister. She hasn’t ever told her husband about the baby she once gave birth to.

THE SECRET OF THEIR BILLION-DOLLAR BABY is a companion book to THE BABY HIS SECRETARY CARRIES as it parallels, and the surrogate appears in that book. It is like reading a book and hearing about a character and their past while wondering what happened. You get the answer. Sasha was raised in a privileged lifestyle but ended up in a fling with a much older married man. It made her rethink her life once she got pregnant and she did what she could to get away from her family. Later, Rafael provided the perfect answer to not being forced to marry a man she didn’t love, and they have been happy for the past three years. But Sasha realizes that she now loves him. The angst in this tale has Sasha wondering if her marriage is over if her husband doesn’t love her. Meanwhile, the surrogate is pregnant. At some point, Sasha will need to reveal the truth about her so-called memory loss. Will Rafael hate her for lying to him?

THE SECRET OF THEIR BILLION-DOLLAR BABY turned out to be an interesting read and readers will sympathize with Sasha. Her mother and stepfather are awful, and Rafael has a hard time expressing emotion and accepting love. Can they work things out and find a happily ever after? Find out the answer by grabbing a copy.
