But she is in the past, and he has to marry for the future. I do think readers need to pretend a little that Cesare totally can’t see Beatrice as the woman he spent that night with. Yes, she hides in baggy clothes and wears her hair differently along with thick glasses. But looking into her eyes and when she talked, he still didn’t catch on.
