| DROP DEAD GORGEOUS – Rachel Gibson Texas & Michigan – Present Day Brittany Lynn Snider is a good, church-going woman who rarely lies. But one day she has to lie to her mama because Brittany is going to El Paso to hook up with her tinder date. On the way, she gets a text message from the guy that he can’t make it because his wife found out. His wife??? Shook up by what she read, Brittany loses control of the van she’s driving—and next wakes up in the hospital looking down at her unrecognizable form laying in the hospital bed. Brittany is on her way to the afterlife, except there’s a bit of a detour. It’s explained to her by the man in the concierge where people wait before it’s determined if they will die and go to heaven or be allowed to live, that she must wait her turn. Ready to go to the afterlife, her trip “upstairs” is interrupted when another woman, nicknamed “Detroit,” jumps in front of Brittany and goes instead. Brittany wakes up in the hospital to learn that she is now Edie Chatsworth-Jones of Detroit, Michigan—and very rich. She was warned by her heavenly handlers that she can’t go around telling people what happened. But she knows that whatever the future holds, she wants to get back to her hometown of Marfa, Texas—and back to her mother. The journey takes time, including healing from her (or rather, Edie’s) extensive self-inflicted injuries and being sent to a mental hospital for a psychiatric hold by her family. Speaking of her family, Edie is a rich socialite who had no goal in life. The new Edie baffles her family as she tries to make good of her wealth. Of course, she also gets to enjoy the spoils of being rich. Meanwhile, she attempts to call mama and learns that Brittany is dead and her parents, who are divorced, are now getting “reacquainted.” She’d love to get the background behind that, but she can’t tell them that she is Brittany. She will just have to wait until she reaches Marfa and learns what is going on. DROP DEAD GORGEOUS isn’t a romance but a contemporary/paranormal tale about what it would be if you find yourself hovering between life and death. Brittany-now-Edie finds it isn’t easy to step into someone else’s shoes. She has to fake amnesia in order to cover why she doesn’t know certain people, events, or places. Meanwhile, the real Edie thought she had a pipeline to the ever after, but because she altered the plans, she has a bit of a detour. While only a small part of this tale, readers get a glimpse of what happens. If you love an off-the-wall story that keeps you reading and intrigued by what will happen next, then you will love DROP DEAD GORGEOUS.
