Virginia – Present Day & 1996 Present Day – Tess Murphy is running for Governor of Virginia. She is seemingly the perfect candidate as her values align with voters, and she has the perfect husband in Dean to stand by her side. But there is a secret she has been carrying for twenty-five years—and the subject of that secret is running against her. Tess can’t tell anyone that she knew Grant Alexander twenty-five years ago, or that they were teenage lovers. If she did, it would likely destroy everything she has built. Grant is acutely aware that if it gets out about his fling—and the consequences of it—with Tess, it will likely destroy his career. He comes from a rich family and has forged his own path to success despite his father’s oversized presence. Grant hates his father for what happened to his mother. But that is the past, and now the past is roaring toward him and Tess. Will the secret remain hidden, or will it be revealed? 1996 – Seventeen-year-old Tess arrives at an affluent Virginia estate with her mother, who has obtained a temporary summer job running Madeline Milton’s home. Tess is bored until she meets Kay Alexander, the next-door neighbor, and then Kay’s eighteen-year-old son, Grant. Tess and Grant hit it off as friends, then became more than that. But forces are working against them. They want to be together, but will that happen? Things begin to spiral out of control. It soon becomes the summer that changed their lives. THE SUMMER WE RAN is an emotion-filled tale that will have you glued to the pages. Tess and Grant come from totally different backgrounds. His father is rich and powerful, and he wants to control everyone around him, including his only son, Grant. Tess’s mother is a single mother from humble beginnings. If this summer job with Madeline Milton is satisfactory, then her mother has hopes of a permanent job. Kay Alexander seems a bit neurotic at times, but she also appears to be a nice woman. She befriends Tess and hires her to work in her garden. Grant is spending the summer here also, as he was just suspended from the boarding school he was attending. He is spoiled, but beneath that rich boy attitude is a nice guy. As Tess and Grant’s relationship grows closer, they fall in love. Young love is hard to stop, especially when they want to be together. But things soon change… Part of the issue with Tess and Grant in THE SUMMER WE RAN is that they have kept these secrets buried. They are painful for both, yet secrets can easily rise to the surface. Both have spouses whom they haven’t been honest with about talking to them about their past. But the shared secrets soon draw Tess and Grant together. When someone starts sending stalker-like photos to Tess’s campaign manager, it needs to be dealt with. Then, a picture of Grant and Tess together during the summer of 1996 is received by the campaign manager. What does the mysterious sender want? Will the secret be exposed to the public? Will their campaigns blow up? THE SUMMER WE RAN goes back and forth from the present day to 1996. We also see the point of view from both Tess and Grant. Readers will feel the pulse of emotion emanating between them. They are pulled together even now. How will it all end? Will the secrets be exposed, and how will they be handled? Through many chapters, we see what happens, and I could hardly wait until the end. Was it a happy ending for both, or did it end sadly? You will need to find out the answer by grabbing a copy.
