Historical Romance

England - 1818

The Ransome brothers, Finn and Kieran, and their friend Dominic (Dom) Kilburn are in big trouble with their respective parents. Finn and Kieran helped Dom escape before his wedding ceremony to their sister, Willa, when Dom made it clear to them that he doesn't deserve their sister, and he'll make her life miserable. The Earl of Wingrave the Ransome men's father, their mother, and Dom's father, former longshoreman, and now a wealthy business owner, Ned Kilburn, have given their sons an ultimatum. They must each marry within a year or be cut off from all allowances.

Kieran, a well-known rake, is at a loss when it comes to meeting the right woman to marry. His past shenanigans have kept him on the outskirts of civility, so he is never invited to ton affairs any longer. In a last ditch effort to clean up his reputation, he enlists the help of Dom's sister, Celeste. He hopes she will get him on the road to acceptance, even though the last thing he wants is a wife.

Celeste Kilburn knew the dark side of life as her father scrabbled and fought his way out of penury. Her heart is still with the poor, but Ned Kilburn wants his daughter out in society, and he wants her to marry a title. Celeste has her own ideas, though, and she has made a deal with roguish Kieran Ransome that she will help him fit back into society if he takes her to gaming clubs, or places more exciting than teas and balls. What could go wrong?

Accompanying a disguised Celeste into the very places he should be avoiding is eye-opening to Kieran as he observes her behavior. She is clearly enjoying the role of a flirtatious tart. Kieran is also enjoying seeing the normally obedient daughter of Ned Kilburn come out of her shell. And her beauty is overwhelming him. But Kieran is pretty sure that Ned and Dom would not like him courting Celeste.

Celeste is thoroughly enjoying herself. However, with her father's dreams of her marrying a lord, with one very boring one on the verge of asking for her hand, Celeste knows her time is limited. Plus, how can she ignore the fact that Kieran is getting under her skin?

An enjoyable and page turning tale, THE GOOD GIRL'S GUIDE TO RAKES has both humor and poignancy. Kieran has seen what a bad marriage is after observing his own parents, and Celeste simply doesn't have the heart to forget her family's past, or the people they left behind in the tenements.
