Twin Pines, Quebec - Present Day

The tiny, relatively obscure village of Twin Pines is a tight-knit community far from the bright lights of Montreal. The villagers are a diverse group that includes shop owners, artists, innkeepers, and, most prominent, the chief inspector of the Surete du Quebec (provincial police force), Armand Gamache. The citizens recently discovered some interesting, and somewhat disturbing, information after a letter, dating back over a hundred years ago, is received by one of the villagers. A stone mason reveals that there is a walled-up room that he was hired to seal. He makes it known that what could be in that room prompted him to write the letter, which was quite obviously never initially received by the recipient. When the room is found and opened up, events become ever more confusing.

In the meantime, a brother and sister whom Gamache and his next in command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, dealt with years ago appear in Twin Pines. Both officers were involved in the case relating to the murder of the sibling's mother, and Gamache and Beauvoir wonder what has brought the two back into their lives. Gamache is worried about their sudden appearance, and has doubts about their sincerity, wondering if the brutal death of their mother has continued to haunt them.

Is it a coincidence that the arrival of the siblings happened when the hidden room contents are revealed? Why is Gamache especially upset by all of the strange symbols and pictures in the artwork that has been discovered in the room? Who is really behind this revelation, and why does it all seem to target the chief inspector?

As usual, Louise Penny keeps her readers on the edge of their seats in this latest novel. A WORLD OF CURIOSITIES can be a   stand alone, but I do recommend reading the previous books in order to get a true idea of Gamache's growing unease over the "curiosities" revealed in the long hidden room. And, a warning, once the reader reaches a certain point in this book, it will be impossible to put it down until the ending!

An amazing, thrilling story as readers return to Twin Pines and the brilliance of Armand Gamache.
