Medicine Creek, Wyoming – Present Day

Matilda Hunt returns home to Wyoming after a disastrous romance left her pregnant and alone. She had previously lost her beloved husband due to an accident three years ago and had recently jumped back into the dating pool—only to be burned. One of the first people that Matilda hopes to see (after her parents) is her best friend, Ethan Bravo. Ethan, Matilda, and her late husband, Gabe, were inseparable growing up and even lived in California together for a while. Ethan is a successful lawyer who moved back to Medicine Creek and is happy to see Matilda. They catch up, he learns about her pregnancy, and he offers his support. There are a couple of problems though. He is seeing another woman, and he can barely hide the fact that he has been in love with Matilda forever. He watched his best friend marry the woman he loved, leaving him out in the cold.

HIS BEST FRIEND’S GIRL is a combination of unrequited love and a friends-to-lovers romance. Ethan returned to Wyoming years ago because he had a rough time hiding his jealousy with Gabe winning Matilda’s heart. It was better to remove himself from being around them, though he continued to remain good friends with them. After Gabe’s death, he continued to support Matilda as a friend and moved on to date Sylvia. But once Matilda returns home, he can’t wait to spend all his free time with her. The first night, she even ends up sleeping in his guest room after falling asleep on his couch. He offers his services to her as a birth coach, plus other things. One can see where this is going. Sylvia soon realizes that she has a competitor for her boyfriend—and dumps Ethan.

Matilda is completely oblivious to the fact that Ethan is showering her with all his attention. I guess a lot can be traced back to their childhood when the threesome was inseparable. But after a while, especially when she has a confrontation with Sylvia, Matilda tries to back off. But it is hard to stay away from your best friend, especially one who is as supportive as Ethan. Readers will be wondering when she will realize that he is in love with her.

I enjoyed reading HIS BEST FRIEND’S GIRL because Ethan and Matilda are truly nice characters with realistic issues. Matilda is also dealing with her cousin who is having marital issues—but doesn’t know why because her cousin isn’t telling her everything! Ethan continues to struggle with his feelings about Matilda, especially when they grow closer after Sylvia is out of the picture. Friendship turns to sex, though they want to remain best friends. Will that happen? Find out the answer by grabbing a copy of HIS BEST FRIEND’S GIRL.
