Interview with
C.W. Gortner, author of THE LAST QUEEN (August 2008)
By Terrie Figueroa
Hi Christopher, welcome to Romance Reviews Today.
RRT: Please tell us a little
bit about yourself.
CWG: I was born in Washington
D.C. My father was American and my mother is from Madrid, Spain.
In my childhood, my family moved to Malaga in southern Spain and
there I began my life-long fascination with history. My mom gave
me my first historical novel when I was nine (it was ‘Murder
Most Royal’ by Jean Plaidy) and after that I was hooked.
I always wanted to know more about the people I read about and
I’d trade volunteer time at the local used bookstore in
exchange for books.

Historical Fiction
Spain and Flanders - 1492 to 1550
Juana, one of the daughters of Queen Isabel and King
Ferdinand of Spain, is born into a world of turmoil and uncertainty.
As the offspring of rulers, she knows from childhood that her
future is not her own. Bright, inquisitive, and bold, Juana adores
her father, respects her coldly regal mother, and, above all,
loves her country. The thought of leaving Spain is abhorrent to
her, but she is destined to wed the Archduke Philip of Flanders,
the son of the Hapsburg emperor, a move which will, hopefully,
align Flanders with Spain rather than her enemy, France. At sixteen,
with her entourage, Juana sails away from her beloved homeland
into a future no one could have predicted.
