YA Paranormal Fiction
Kenzie Sutcliffe awoke one morning and got ready for school.
Everything seemed normal, that is to say, wrong. She is her usual
klutzy self, with a monster zit on her chin -- then bam! Kenzie
trips on her baggy pajama leg and dumps a load of zit lotion down
the bathtub drain, thereby opening a portal to the demon world
and releasing one teen-aged male envy demon named Levi. Kenzie's
luck is running true to form; this guy is geeky and average looking,
aren't demons supposed to be handsome, like Buffy's Angel? Now
she is stuck with him; he has convinced her parents that he is
a normal kid, but needs to stay with them while his "parents"
battle a black mold problem in his house.
It's bad enough that she has to lose her private bathroom due
to its being an open demon portal, now she has to take him to
school, where everything goes perfectly for him like it never
does for her. Even her brother and sister like him, and even worse,
he can drive and Kenzie hasn't been able to pass her drivers'
test. Can life get any worse than that?
DEMON ENVY could be described as a teen chick lit novel. Kenzie
is a normal angst-filled, sometimes-bratty teen; she feels misunderstood,
and she misunderstands others as well. Her family and friends,
as well as others at school, are light, humorous characters with
a few unexpected depths. Kenzie and her friends are people with
whom teenaged readers can relate. Levi is great teen hero material
-- full of conflicts, but with hidden depths. Sometimes he really
annoys Kenzie; does she really want to get rid of him? He seems
to get more attractive as Kenzie gets to know him better, the
same as in real-life relationships. Though I could have asked
for a little more detail to the story line, DEMON ENVY is fast-paced
and easy to read, with just a little touch of romance, a fun book
for the teenaged reader.
